Performs all the tasks and activities of a Tree Pruner and supervises a crew of Tree Pruners or Highway Maintenance Workers engaged in a variety of tree maintenance tasks. Duties include but are not limited to:
o Plans method of topping and felling trees based on previous experience, accepted safety and work practices, and other factors such as tree size and location. o Inspects and recommends the removal of dead or dangerous trees. o Assigns work crew to specific jobs. o Climbs trees to assist and instruct crew personnel on work and safety practices, and demonstrates proper use of equipment and materials such as log loader, bucket truck, stump grinder, chippers and chainsaws. o Maintains standard written records of employee time, work performed, and materials and equipment used. o Observes work in progress and that which is completed to ensure that proper safety and work procedures are followed, and that the quality of work is satisfactory. o May be responsible for a tree care program to preserve specimen trees and for the care of a wide variety of ornamental trees. o Will perform snow and ice duties and may supervise snow and ice control related activities. o Other duties may be assigned based on operational need. Responsibilities also may include participating within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Salary Range:
From $43648 to $53490 Annually
Minimum Qualification
To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law. If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made. If you are appointed provisionally, you will have to take and pass the next Civil Service examination for this title when it is administered. Employees appointed provisionally must be reachable on the resulting eligible list for that title or their employment in the position (may have hold item) will end. The minimum requirements for taking the Promotional Examination are:
You must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Transportation and have had three months of permanent non-competitive service as a Tree Pruner. To qualify for appointment from the eligible list, candidates must have one year of service as a Tree Pruner. At the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, appointees will be required to have a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restriction. Appointees to this position will be required to obtain a large dump certification and a one-person snow plowing certification during the probationary period. Failure to obtain and maintain these certifications will result in termination. Specific time frames for obtaining the certifications will be discussed at the job interview. You may be required to obtain and maintain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License or a Certified Commercial Pesticide Technician's License from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Appointees to this position may be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position. The minimum requirements for taking the Open Competitive Examination are:
You must have two years of experience in tree care and tree removal (for the purposes of examination, tree care is defined as pruning, applying pesticides, feeding, transplanting, bracing, guying, and topping of trees. This experience must have included tree climbing. At the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, appointees will be required to have a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restriction. Appointees to this position will be required to obtain a large dump certification and a one-person snow plowing certification during the probationary period. Failure to obtain and maintain these certifications will result in termination. Specific time frames for obtaining the certifications will be discussed at the job interview. You may be required to obtain and maintain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License or a Certified Commercial Pesticide Technician's License from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. A medical examination will be required prior to appointment, and you are responsible for payment of the clinical laboratory test fee. Appointees to this position may be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
