Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) - Broome

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Perform preventive maintenance and routine repairs on a variety of Department vehicles and other equipment. Ensure all fleet vehicles are safe and reliable to drive. Address all manufacturer recalls, follow maintenance schedules, and facilitate repairs required due to motor vehicle accidents. Conduct vehicle inspections annually. Having a safe and reliable fleet allows the individuals we serve to live richer lives by traveling and becoming integrated into the local communities in which they live. The position requires computer knowledge, an aptitude for working with numbers, the ability to multi-task, organizational skills, and the ability to work well with others. A person in this position will review documents, verify information, and process work in accordance with State rules and regulations.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
o Diagnose and correct the causes of faulty vehicle and equipment operation o Overhaul, adjust and repair gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions and differentials; ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking and complex hydraulic systems; steering, wheel and suspension mechanisms; and body, cab and frame components o Conduct NYS inspections o Overhaul and rebuild starters, generators, compressors, pumps (fuel, water, air and hydraulic), spreaders, small engines, mowers and a variety of other equipment, including but not limited to, track vehicles, loaders (front-end and belt), cranes, shovels, lifts, hydraulic excavators, etc. o Diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti-lock brake systems and air conditioning o May be required to do cutting and welding o Make road calls and test drive equipment o Complete reports, use parts catalogs and perform other related duties o Effectively utilize the department fleet management software and DOT electronic systems to assist in repair, ordering, and managing the repair schedule and parts stock PREFERRED
Qualifications:
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate and will be evaluated against the following criteria:
o Must be very organized and comfortable working in a dynamic environment. o Candidate must be able to provide good customer service and the ability to work in a team environment. o Candidate must be able to understand and carry out written or oral instructions o Preference given to those with NYS Motor Vehicle Inspector Certificate.

Salary Range:
From $44354 to $54140 Annually
Minimum Qualification
Non-competitive:
Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems. OR an Associate degree in automotive or diesel repair technology Substitution:
Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of
Experience:
Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience. Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience. Transfer
Qualifications:
Anyone currently in title as a Service & Repair Mechanic Motor Equipment or anyone eligible for a 70.1 transfer.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
